HuD is expressed only in neurons and it binds to AU-rich element-containing mRNAs. As a result of this interaction the half-life of the transcript is increased. HuD is important in neurons during brain development and plasticity.[4][5]
HuD was originaly discovered as the paraneoplastic antigen expressed in neuroendocrine tumors. Recombinant HuD was first used to assay the presence of anti-Hu antibodies and thereby diagnose the presence of small cell lung cancer and subacute sensory neuronopathy.
